Who Is Jesus, and Why Did He Die for Me?

Christian meditation

Welcome to Part 5 of my 10-part blog series What Is Salvation? You have questions about salvation; the Bible has the answers.

Who is Jesus? (Or: “Of course I’ve heard of Him, but what’s the big deal?”)

For some people, Jesus is a familiar Sunday school name. For others, He’s a historical figure, a moral teacher, or a great prophet.

But the real question is: Who is Jesus, according to the Bible, and why did He willingly go to the cross for you?

Spoiler alert: This is the most important question you’ll ever answer.

👑 Jesus Isn’t Just a Man; He’s God in the Flesh

First things first: Jesus didn’t begin in Bethlehem. He’s eternal. He is God Himself, the second Person of the Trinity. He is God the Son.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” – John 1:1 (KJV)
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…” – John 1:14 (KJV)

Jesus left Heaven, took on human flesh, and lived among us. Not as a distant deity, but as a humble servant. 100% God, 100% man. No sin, no flaws, no ego. Just pure holiness clothed in humanity.

🌍 Why Did He Come to Earth?

Simple answer: to save us.

“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” – Luke 19:10 (KJV)

Jesus didn’t come to start a religion or set up a political kingdom. He came on a rescue mission: to save sinners (that’s all of us) from the judgment we rightly deserve.

✝️ Why Did Jesus Die?

Here’s the heart of it:

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8 (KJV)

Jesus died because of love. Not weakness. Not accident. Not politics. He chose the cross so He could take your place and bear your punishment.

He didn’t just die for you; He died instead of you.

“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree…” – 1 Peter 2:24a (KJV)

All the sin, guilt, shame, and wrath that should’ve fallen on us, Jesus took it willingly. That’s why the cross is so powerful. It’s not a symbol of religion; it’s the moment the debt of sin was paid in full.

🩸 But Why Blood?

Some people ask, “Why all the talk about blood? Couldn’t God just forgive us?”

Here’s why:

“Without shedding of blood is no remission.” – Hebrews 9:22b (KJV)

From the Old Testament onward, the shedding of blood represented the payment for sin. But animal sacrifices were only temporary. They had to be done over and over again.

Jesus’s blood was the once-and-for-all sacrifice.

“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” – John 1:29b (KJV)

His death satisfied God’s justice and opened the door to God’s mercy.

🕳️ And He Didn’t Stay Dead

Let’s not forget this: He rose again.

Three days after the crucifixion, Jesus walked out of the tomb, proving once and for all that He’s not just a good teacher or historical prophet. He is the living Lord.

“He is not here: for he is risen, as he said.” – Matthew 28:6a (KJV)

The resurrection matters. Without it, we’d have a dead hero. But because of it, we have a living Savior who has power over sin, death, and the grave.

🗣️ Let’s Recap in One Sentence

Jesus is God in the flesh, who came to earth to die in your place, pay for your sin with His blood, and rise again so you could be saved and live forever.

❤️ Why It Matters to You

This isn’t just theology. The truth of Jesus’s sacrifice is deeply personal. He didn’t just die for “the world.” He died for you.

He knows your name. He saw your sin. And He still went to the cross.

He’s not asking you to clean yourself up. He’s asking you to believe.

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life…” – John 3:36a (KJV)

✨ Next Time

Next time, we’ll answer the question: “How Can I Be Sure the Bible’s Way Is the Right Way?”
We’ll dig into how we know this message is true and why it’s not just “one of many paths.”
