Welcome to Part 2 of my 10-part blog series What Is Salvation? You have questions about salvation; the Bible has the answers.
Why do I need to be saved? (Or: “I’m not a bad person, so what’s the big deal?”)
If you’ve ever asked this question, you’re not alone. Maybe you’ve thought:
- “I try to be a good person.”
- “I’ve never killed anyone!”
- “I go to church… sometimes.”
- “I’m spiritual, but not religious.”
- “I pay my taxes!”
Alright, you get a gold star for civic responsibility. But here’s the thing: Salvation isn’t based on good deeds, morality, or even spirituality. It’s about something much deeper: the condition of your heart before a holy God.
⚖️ God’s Standard vs. Our Standard
Most of us measure ourselves by comparing to other people: “Sure, I’ve messed up, but at least I’m not as bad as that guy.”
But God’s standard isn’t based on how we stack up against others. It’s based on His own perfect holiness.
“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” – Matthew 5:48 (KJV)
That’s a high bar. Like… impossibly high. Why? Because He’s not just “better” than us. He’s holy. Completely sinless and set apart.
And no matter how “good” we think we are, the Bible is crystal clear:
“There is none righteous, no, not one.” – Romans 3:10 (KJV)
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23 (KJV)
That includes the preacher, the prisoner, the PTA mom, and you guessed it, even you and me.
🧬 Sin Isn’t Just What You Do. It’s What You Are
Here’s where it gets real. Sin isn’t just the bad stuff we do; it’s the nature we’re born with. That selfish streak? That pride? That urge to lie, even about small stuff? It’s all part of the package.
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” – Romans 5:12 (KJV)
We inherited a sin nature from Adam, and that nature separates us from God.
And sin isn’t just some minor character flaw. It’s rebellion against the Creator who made us.
🔥 Okay, But What’s the Consequence?
Let’s not sugarcoat it. The Bible says sin earns a wage, and that wage is death.
“For the wages of sin is death…” – Romans 6:23a (KJV)
That’s both physical death (our bodies die) and spiritual death (eternal separation from God in a real place called Hell). Yes, Hell is real. And Jesus talked about it more than anyone else in the Bible, not to scare people but to warn us.
❤️ God Doesn’t Want You to Perish
Here’s the good news (because wow, we need some right about now):
God doesn’t want anyone to stay lost. He doesn’t want you to face judgment and go to Hell. That’s why He provided a way out.
“The Lord is… not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” – 2 Peter 3:9 (KJV)
He sent Jesus to take your place, pay your penalty, and offer you salvation as a gift.
🎯 So Why Do You Need to Be Saved?
Because without salvation, you’re already lost. Not because you’re the worst human ever, but because no one can measure up to God’s righteousness.
We don’t need to be saved because we’re bad compared to other people. We need to be saved because we’re separated from God, and there’s no way to bridge that gap on our own.
But here’s the hope: Jesus already built the bridge with His blood. You just need to take the step of faith and accept His salvation.
🗣️ Let’s Recap in One Sentence
You need to be saved because sin separates you from God, and only Jesus can fix what sin has broken.

We’ll dive into another big question: “What Am I Being Saved From?”
(And no, it’s not just “a bad life.” The Bible gets very specific.)
